First round 2021/2022

124 young philosophers submitted their essays for first round of the 2021/2022 Swiss Philosophy Olympiad.

After a submission deadline on November 30, the first round of the 2021/2022 Swiss Philosophy Olympiad was concluded on December 4, when our volunteers got together at the University of Berne to determine which essays would qualify for the next round. The essays were graded anonymously according to our criteria: coherence, persuasiveness, originality, relevance and philosophical context.

The participants of the first round could choose from one of the four topics:

Who owns nature?
Is it irrational to act against one’s own preferences?

The first topic proved particularly popular, prompting many reflections on climate change.

The authors of the 53 best essays have been invited to the semi-finals on January 13 at Collège de Gambach in Fribourg, Kantonsschule Zürcher Oberland in Wetzikon, Kantonsschule am Burggraben in St. Gallen and Gymnasium Immensee. There, they will be writing another essay and participating in a philosophical workshop. While we are planning an in-person semifinal (with Covid certificates), we are of course carefully observing the pandemic and its implication on our events.

Fünf Nachwuchstalente gewinnen Schweizer Wirtschafts-Olympiade

Während andere olympische Champions schnell rennen oder weit springen, verstehen die Finalist*innen der Wirtschafts-Olympiade ökonomische Zusammenhänge und präsentieren gewiefte Geschäftsideen. Fünf von ihnen wurden am 5. Mai mit Medaillen gekürt und kommen weiter in die internationale Runde:

Bronze für zwei Schweizer Jungmathematikerinnen

Vom 13. bis 19. April fand in Slowenien die 12. Europäische Mathematik-Olympiade für junge Frauen statt. Über 200 Schülerinnen aus über 50 Ländern trafen auf anspruchsvolle Aufgaben, neue Freundinnen und berühmte Mathematikerinnen.

Biology

Mit dem Sezierbesteck aufs Siegerpodest

Vom 11. bis 16. April fand an der Universität Bern das Finale der Schweizer Biologie-Olympiade statt. 18 Jugendliche stellten ihr Wissen über die belebte Natur unter Beweis. Auf die vier Gewinner wartet nun ein Abenteuer in den Arabischen Emiraten.

Chemistry

These four young talents will represent Switzerland at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Zurich

April 15: Four winners of this year’s Swiss Chemistry Olympiad were awarded gold medals at ETH Zurich. They are among the 300 young people from over 90 countries who will compete in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in July. The competition will be held for the first time in Switzerland.
